Age eligibility

At Wallingford Wildcats as with many Hockey clubs in the country we combine 2 age groups into one. i.e Under 8, Under 10, Under 12 and Under 14. For your child to be eligible to train and play matches for the Under 10's, they  should be under 9 or Under 10 years of age on the 1st September at the start of the new season. If they are 10 years of age on September 1st then they are eligible for the U12's.

Main objectives for the year

Our main objective for the coming season will be to re-enforce the basic skills they will have already learnt, or if they are new to hockey, build the basic skills that will allow them to enjoy the game. Once the basic skills have been learnt, we will be looking at some basic strategies including defence and attack plays, 1 v1, 2 v1, 2 v 2 plays, free hits, defending and attacking short corners. Our key thread will be sticking to our formation and spreading the ball wide making sure we are using the whole pitch.

At the end of the season, our older boys and girls will have all played a number of friendlies plus the odd tournament or two. Some may even have an involvement in the County U11 squad. In addition, all players will have a firm grasp on the basic skills required to play hockey and will understand basic strategies and the benefits of maintaining a formation.

Away matches

Over the season we will play a number of matches. We normally play all players who turn up in the home fixtures and have taken a squad of 10-12 players for the away games. Match fixtures will be posted on the web site and on the notice board.

Kit

For training we ask that children come suitably dressed. In the colder winter months this means gloves, warm hat, at least one other top layer and track suit bottoms or equivalent. We would also recommend they bring a drink.

Please note that shinpads are mandatory. Gumshields and gloves are recommended. We will check your child is suitably dressed at the start of each session and if necessary, your child will not participate if the coach believes the child is unsuitably attired. For matches, your child will need team colours. This is normally a green and white quartered top with white shorts and green socks. If it is early in the season and you have not got around to purchasing these items then try at least to find green top.
