Oxford City Hockey Festival - 29th Novemebr 2009 -

Wallingford U8 enjoy scoring a score of goals

There might have been blustery showers at Headington Girls School, but Wallingford Wildcats U8s were roaring at the City of Oxford Hockey Festival. Split into two teams, the Pumas and the Panthers, they played brilliantly finding the back of the net 20 times, including scoring within 5 seconds of the start of the festival.

With wins over City (5-0), Hawks (2-0) and a draw against Rover (1-1)  the Panthers were purring all over the pitch.  Goals coming from Annabel Roe, Edward Gilbert-Blay, Jayden Zamler and Oli Shaw.  There was some great movement and passing from the midfield especially Isabella Worthington, Eva Potts and Connor Morrison.  Stout defending and strong tackling from Ieuan Darkes, Edward Jenkins and Tyl Meyer saw only one goal conceded in three games.

Not to be outdone the Pumas achieved great things against City, Hawks and Banbury. A very strong all round team performance leading to 12 goals scored and 3 wins.
With crafty goals from Nathan Hamer, well supported from midfield by Tom Ferris, Lucas Helmschott Bowdon and Katie Shannon we were always going to be hard to beat.  Hayo Van Der Tang added speed and width with powerful runs down the right side and some lovely crossing, well hit corners and low shooting on goal.  Cordelia Mahony, Alex Ostridge, Tegan Farquaharson and Francis Wahlen provided our resilient back-line only conceding 1 goal in the entire festival.  Finally a special mention to Edward Carter Keall who played a key role as sweeper, clearing and distributing the ball through to our midfield and wings.

Most importantly despite the cold, great fun was had by all and big smiles were visible all round as the team photo proves. [link to team photo]

Our thanks to all the parents who braved the winds and threat of rain to cheer us on and a special mention to Ben, Anna, and Ian who helped manage, coach, umpire and support our teams. We couldnt do it without you.

See you all next week for training as usual at Wallingford. Its 2 weeks to go before our special Christmas session. It would be great to have some more parent help to organise the day. If you can lend a hand please let us know.
