Wallingford
ladies 1st XI returned to the top spot in the Trysports Three
Counties Premier League after a 4-3 victory over Reading 2s at the
Hithercroft sports park on Saturday. Wallingford started strongly
and caught the Reading team unaware when a smooth passage of play
from the back resulted in a fine finish by Jude Turner and an early
lead for Wallingford. This lead was further extended when Jess
Bryson found herself in some space at the edge of the 'D' and
utilised it to put Wallingford 2-0 up. Despite some strong
defending, particularly by player of the match Patricia Hildred,
Reading fought back strongly and managed to convert a penalty corner
to make the score 2-1 at half time.
Wallingford began the 2nd half as strongly as they did the 1st and
soon went 3-1 up after a scramble around the Reading goal with the
final conversion by Julia Davies. Wallingford conceded a rather
unjust penalty flick but justice was revived by the misplaced
attempt by the Reading flick taker which flew wide of the left hand
post. A major fight-back from Reading bought the score to 3-3
leading into the final 15 minutes of the game. Wallingford's
determination continued and was finally rewarded 3 minutes from the
end of the game when Jess Allen converted a penalty corner to put
Wallingford 4-3 winners at the final whistle. |
