Match Report Archive for Mens 1st XI
Date: 6th February 2010
Opponents: Newbury and Thatcham
Score:  Wallingford Mens 1st XI 1 - 1 Newbury and Thatcham

Wallingford returned to the Hithercroft for the first time since Christmas having been well beaten by top of the league sides in their last two outings.  This time it was bottom of the league Newbury who made the journey.

In a game in which neither side could take control early on there was a lot of turn over and breakdown in both teams play with neither team creating scoring opportunities.  Mid way through the first half it was Wallingford who started to take control of the game but could not make their superiority count before half time.

The second half start as the first one had, with neither team able to dominate or create any long passages of play.  It was Newbury who stuck first from a short corner goal.  This, rather than giving Newbury control of the game, increased the tempo and number of attacks from Wallingford.  With Wallingford temporarily down to ten men it was Tom Bugg who scored the equaliser as Wallingford pushed forward.

The game ended 1 – 1.  Wallingford travel to British Airways next weekend.

Date: 23rd January 2010
Opponents: Maidenhead
Score: Maidenhead 6 Wallingford Mens 1st XI 2
After a prolonged Christmas break Wallingford returned to league action against Maidenhead. The snow and ice had meant that both teams were slightly under prepared for the fixture. Wallingford were certainly caught cold in the first 10 minutes and found themselves 2 down in the early stages. This meant that Wallingford had to throw caution to the wind and inevitably left gaps that a strong Maidenhead side exploited.

Maidenhead were clinical and although Wallingford attacked strongly in the second half scoring twice courtesy of Matt Armitage and Rich Pool after excellent build up play from man of the match Rowan Wheeler, Wallingford were well beaten 6 – 2.

This weekend (30th January) Wallingford face Slough away.

Date: 10th October 2009
Opponents: Maidenhead
Score: Wallingford Mens 1st XI 0 Maidenhead 2

Wallingford suffered their first home defeat of the season to the hands of Maidenhead losing 2-0. Two penalty corners proved decisive with little else between the two sides.

Maidenhead had the early possession and took the lead through a penalty corner. The Wallingford keeper was left stranded as the ball went in off the underside of the cross-bar. Wallingford continued to press creating a few half chances down to good individual play, but lacked that decisive pass, or final finish to bring them back into the game. However, mistakes at the back were proving costly as another penalty corner was conceded, followed by a Maidenhead goal with another drag-flick going to the keeper’s right.

The second half Wallingford was the brighter side coming into the game more. The lack of decisiveness in the final third was again there to see. Wallingford doing everything, but scoring. Maidenhead had another drag-flick of the cross-bar apart from that created very little. Wallingford looked sharper on the break particularly down the left hand side of the pitch. Maidenhead had two yellow cards involving the same players from Wallingford and Maidenhead due to individual skill leading to tackles which were worthy of a sin bin. Wallingford however failed to capitalise on this, although trying to the end failed to breach the Maidenhead goal.

The final result left Wallingford frustrated and Maidenhead happy with a win away from home.

This weekend (17th October) Wallingford play host to Slough at The Hithercroft, push back 1.15pm.

Date: 19th September 2009
Opponents: Reading 2A
Score: Reading 2A 2 Wallingford Mens 1st XI 3

Last weekend saw Wallingford’s newly promoted Men’s 1s travel to Sonning Lane to play Reading 2As, after a comfortable 6-1 victory over Abingdon in their first preseason game this was going to be a much stiffer test of the teams progress.
Wallingford started the game well on a hot and humid day and took an early lead after only 30 seconds when Matt Clamps cross was deflected past the keeper by one of Reading’s defenders.  Wallingford looked to consolidate their early lead and tried to keep possession, in doing this they managed to create a couple of other goal scoring opportunities which lead to some near misses.  Half way through the first half Wallingford extended their lead with Alun Lloyd converted from close range, Rowan Wheeler providing the cross.
The second quarter of the game saw Reading fight back as Wallingford lost their shape and composure.  Reading scored twice before half time, once with a short corner attempt and once in open play.
The second half saw Wallingford regain their composure and take a hold on the game taking the majority of the possession.  A number of promising attacks again came to nothing for Wallingford whilst Reading’s chances came far and few between them.  On the 50 minute mark Nich Golding cut inside from the left, beating a number of defenders before shooting just wide where Tim Chamberlain was on hand to deflect the ball goal wards.  The last 15 minutes of the game was Wallingford soaking up a more determined Reading attack but managing to hold on for a second win in two.
This weekend (26th September) Wallingford play host to Burton Hockey Club from the Midlands League at The Hithercroft, push back 1.15pm.
